I started working there to take over the Managers position ground floor domestic goods. The Manager at the time was a gentleman called Mr. Broadbent. He was living on borrowed time because he had terminal cancer ! It was hard for me because we both knew that he was a dead man walking.I got very close to Mr. Broadbent we often went on the roof of H.E Phillips and enjoyed a coffee and fag together .After about 4 months he died. The morning I opened up the shop and found out about his death I can remember crying like a big girls blouse.I was in my early 20s he was about 50.I could write a thousand words about my working life in that great Ironmongers but will refrain.John Redfern ( now living in Spain ).
