A review of Eburne Primary School by Barry Gowland written on Monday 5th of September 2016
When I was there it wasn't called Eburne; we knew it as Walsgrave Colliery, after the nearby coal mine(presence also immortalised in a pub called The Jolly Colliers). It was in 1948 I started - and didn't want to leave my mum! I can still remember the teachers - Mr Jones(headmaster), Mrs Guest, Miss Hudson, Mr & Mrs Bowness, Miss Simpson, Mr Dale, Mr Thomas, Miss Bourke.
Some other pupils there - Joan Greenhalgh, June Barlow, Carol Unwin, Billy Elkington, Terry Allchin(he later went into the Army), Graham Brownridge, Margaret Sexton, John Sexton, Billy Ardle, Margaret Swallow, Margaret Taylor, Christine Hammond, David Fennell.
School was then out in the country - walked there much of time(lived about 35 minutes' walk from there). Later on the lower bit of Deedmore Road got built up, with what was to be Wood End coming later!.
